Intermediate temperature brittleness of a high-silicon spheroidal graphite cast iron

The target of this research work was characterizing high temperature mechanical properties of an as-cast ferritic HiSi SGI.

The tensile tests performed show a ductility loss between 350°C and 500°C.

Observation of the rupture surfaces and analysis of literature data led the research work to propose a mechanism for intermediate temperature embrittlement that relates heat increase and the amount of magnesium: the higher the magnesium content and the tempreature, the higher is the risk of embrittlement.
