Artificial intelligence in injected aluminum: vacuum technologies and mechanical integrity

As a participating organization in the PERTE project for the Electric and Connected Vehicle (VEC) “Future: Fast Forward”, led by the Volkswagen Group and SEAT S.A., along with GESTAMP, AZTERLAN Metallurgy Research Centre is developing a project on intelligent manufacturing of components through the development and application of Artificial Intelligence for manufacturing of battery box components made of injected aluminum (HPDC manufacturing process).

At the recent networking event held within the project, which brings together 62 companies, AZTERLAN, represented by its General Director, Garikoitz Artola, had the opportunity to share the main objectives and achievements of the project.

Artificial Intelligence developments to produce aluminum HPDC components

AZTERLAN’s contribution is framed within the field of metallurgy and smart manufacturing technologies. Among the different areas included in the 4.0. technologies, the participacion of the Metallurgy Research Centre is focused on the development and application of Artificial Intelligence in the manufacturing of high pressure die casting aluminum components. Specifically, we address an innovative approach to the production of the components of the “battery box” in close cooperation with the company GESTAMP, whose commitment to the transition to electric vehicles is exerting a powerful driving force in the Basque industry.

This approach integrates the capture and analysis of new variable data. The objective of monitoring surface parameters from the HPDC process provides information that is currently out of range. This aspect is fundamental, so that intelligent production control and smart manufacturing technologies will accompany the progressive increase in sophistication in the design of electric vehicles.
