RESLAG Project follow up meeting after the launching of pilot operations for the recovery of high value metals from steel slags

Researchers from IK4-AZTERLAN Metallurgy Research Centre have taken part in a new working meeting of this relevant European Project aimed at the valorisation of steel slag for energy-intensive industries, on February the 28th and March the 1st.

The participants of the RESLAG European project have met in Grenoble, France, to share the latest advances made within the project by the different consortium participants. The follow up meeting has taken place at the CEA headquarters, where the first tests for the recovery of high added value metals from steel slag have been already done by means of a new pilot plant facility.

IK4-AZTERLAN, leader of WP3 dedicated to the production and characterization of new heat-storage materials (pebbles) from steel slag, has successfully fulfilled its commitments regarding this outstanding challenge. More than 7 tonnes of pebbles have been produced through mechanical conforming to be used in Pilot 2, oriented at wasted heat recovery. This pilot will be integrated at the Arcelor Mittal company (Sestao) for the corresponding further validation. As well, more than 10 tonnes of pebbles have been manufactured following the sintering route for the Pilots 3a and 3b. These two additional pilot equipment are oriented to the heat recovery and storage at thermosolar plants.

Extensive chemical, thermophysical, and mechanical characterizations have been made in both materials, which have demonstrated that both of them are appropriate resources to be used for heat storage.

RESLAG “Turning waste from steel industry into a valuable low-cost feedstock for energy” is a European project financed by the H2020- WASTE (2014). Its main target is to valorise and reuse the black slags of steelworks in 4 innovative applications: 1) Extraction of high value non-ferrous metals, 2) Thermal energy storage material for heat recovery applications in industrial sectors, 3) Thermal energy storage material for solar energy concentration plants and 4) Feedstock for the manufacture of refractory materials. The demonstration of each one of the applications is carried out through the design and construction of demonstrators at pilot level.

RESLAG project is formed by a consortium of 19 participants from seven different European countries as well as from Morocco..
