IK4-AZTERLAN takes part in the AFS Metalcasting Congress held in Fort Worth (USA) with the presentation of two technical papers on graphite crystallization from cast iron

Two parts of the extensive research work “A Comparative Study of Crystal Growth in Cast Iron and in Analogous Systems, Part I and Part II” were presented at the congress by Mr. Gorka Alonso, from IK4-AZTERLAN Metallurgy Research Centre, and Professor Doru Michael Stefanescu from the University of Alabama and the Ohio State University.

The 122nd Metalcasting Congress 2018 has been held in Fort Worth (USA) on April 3rd-5th. This international technical event is organised by the American Foundry Society and is one of the referent working frames on casting technologies.

Once again, IK4-AZTERLAN has taken part in the official program of the Congress with the presentation of two papers on graphite crystallization in cast iron. A complex phenomenon that has been object of restless research works, that keep on revealing great improvements in the field of solidification processes of ferrous alloys.

To understand the complexity of graphite crystallization in cast iron Gorka Alonso, researcher at the IK4-Research Metallurgy Research Center, and Professor Doru Michael Stefanescu, from the University of Alabama and the Ohio State University, presented some of the results of two different working lines from the research work “A Comparative Study of Crystal Growth in Cast Iron and in Analogous Systems”.

In the first one, Mr. Stefanescu presented a comparative study of crystal growth in materials with hexagonal structure, such as graphite. During the second presentation, Gorka Alonso focused on the experimental work on the multi-mechanism theory of graphite crystallization from cast iron.

As a technology centre specialised in metallurgy, IK4-AZTERLAN . Solidification processes and graphite crystallization in ferrous alloys are some of its main research areas from the centre.
