IK4-AZTERLAN hosts the follow up meeting of the RESLAG European Project, aimed to develop advanced reclaiming systems for the steel industry main waste materials.

On the 7th and 8th of September the follow-up working meeting of the European project RESLAG (“Turning waste from steel industry into a valuable low cost feedstock for energy intensive industry”) has taken place on the premises of IK4-AZTERLAN.

RESLAG project’s main objective is the recovery of slags, being one of the major waste streams from the steelmaking industry, either as thermal storage materials for energy-intensive consumption industries and concentrated solar power generation, or as raw materials to extract valuable metals from their composition.

The working meeting has allowed to follow up the progress of the different activities initially planned within the project. The research lines in the 42-month working plan aim at developing novel technologies for the sustainable valorisation of steel slags in the following industrial fields:

  • To obtain new refractory materials
  • To be applied for Thermal Energy Storage systems in industrial waste-heat recovery applications and in Concentrated Solar Power applications
  • Te reclaim high added-value metallic elements.

These eco-innovative industrial alternative applications will be tested in 4 large scale pilot demonstrations in the project.

With a budget over 8.700.000€ and three working years ahead, the RESLAG Project has been supported by the EU under the Horizon 2020 Program, bringing together an international consortium formed by 18 reference entities from 8 different countries, among which stay the CIC-Energigune (project leader), Arcelor Mittal Sestao, Novargi Industries S.L. and IK4-AZTERLAN Metallurgical Technical Centre.
