Computerized axial tomography applied to the control of non-conventional components

In the framework of the Non-Destructive Testing Conference coordinated by the IK4 Research Alliance and held recently in Madrid, Mr. Carmelo Santamarina, head of the NDT area of IK4-AZTERLAN Metallurgical Research Centre showed some of the capacities of this technology through various industrial applications of interest.

Tomography has important fields of application that go beyond the automotive sector, such as in the medical field with components made from high density alloys (for example the ones used to manufacture hip prostheses), and components made by MIM technology (very present in the aeronautical sector), or foams manufactured by the combination of multiple elements.

Mr. Santamarina shared the scope of several recent experiences and studies carried out successfully in the IK4-AZTERLAN Metallurgical Research Centre laboratories (as can be seen in the document attached in the end of this news item).

Digital Tomography and other Non Destructive Testing

Digital or computerized axial tomography is a technique that allows to detect internal defects in components of ferrous or non-ferrous alloys. It allows to accurately locate the defect volume in the component and quantify its size.

In addition to this technique, IK4-AZTERLAN also counts among its technological capabilities with equipment for conducting radioscopy tests, fluorescent penetrant liquids verification systems, magnetic particle tests and ultrasound testing by contact, TOFD and Phased Array techniques.

In addition, IK4-AZTERLAN has 31 non-destructive certifications according to UNE EN ISO 9712, (VT-RT-PT-MT), level 3 qualified technicians, radioactive facility supervisors and ENAC accredited tests on ultrasonic and magnetic particles.
