April 24th: “Corrosion Awareness Day”. Impact of the corrosion phenomena in the industry

IK4-Azterlan Metallurgical Research Center has outstanding capabilities related to corrosion and protection of metallic materials.

To put the eye on the impact of corrosion on environment, on natural resources and on human life, in 2012 the  proclaimed April 24th “Corrosion Awareness Day

World Corrosion Organization

Corrosion is a phenomenon that has a direct influence in most of the industrial activities and technological developments, with a major impact on the ecnomy. Indeed, the WCO estimates that the annual costs of corrosion exeeds 2 trillion euros worldwide.

As a Technology Centre specialized in metallurgy and metallic materials, IK4-Azterlan has a wide technologic offer related to corrosion and protection of metallic materials. Regarding the in this area, they are mainly focused in the surface modification of cast components in order to improve their functional behavior against wear and corrosion, as well as in de development of bimetallic materials by mixed melting

technological developments of the center

In the same direction, IK4-Azterlan provides to the metalworking industry  under the ENAC accreditation, such as accelerated and acid corrosion for corrosion resistant alloys, salt spray and condensation water test atmospheres for the evaluation of coatings, or specific tests under NACE standards for the Oil&Gas industry, in addition to failure and defective analysis linked to corrosion phenomena.

a wide range of tests

Currently the IK4-Azterlan Metallurgical Research Centre is also part of the  consortium, focused on the development of innovative anti-corrosion and antifouling solutions that can be extrapolated to several coastal applications. The Oceanic project is funded through the support of SPRI, EVE, SWEA, CDTI and FCT, within the OCEANERA-NET (Ocean Energy European Research Network) framework program under the reference OCEANERA/0005/2014.oceaneranet.eu.
