The present invention relates to a process for the manufacturing of a forming tool which comprises: providing a base steel for the forming tool; and a clad steel of defined chemical composition; depositing by laser cladding the clad steel onto at least part of the surface of the base steel for the forming tool, obtaining a coating with presence of retained austenite; finish machining in soft condition of the resulting piece; and cryogenic treatment to transform the retained austenite into martensite and increase the hardness of the generated coating.
The invention also relates to the forming tool with improved hardness and wear resistance, obtained by the process of the invention.
